In October 2013 the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival launched in Johannesburg.
Over the years the DStv Delicious Festival event has taken place at four different venues. 2013, 2014 and 2015, all on open field government owned parks. By 2016 the event had established itself as South Africa’s premier lifestyle event, attracting 40,000 of Johannesburg’s hottest consumers, and moved to the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
The DStv Delicious Festival event happens over one weekend, however, the festival employs a full-time staff roster managing the festival’s clients who live on the ‘event platform’ which provides the ability for them to leverage their involvement all year round.
In 2023 the Festival celebrated its milestone ‘Decade of Delicious’, commemorating ten years of culinary and musical excellence and in 2024 the theme was focused on Celebrating 30 years of Creative Freedom in South Africa.
DStv Delicious Festival South Africa has partnered with numerous stakeholders, lending itself to their own objectives and goals.
Delicious Festival Trader Academy (DFTA) powered by FoodBev SETA, is a dynamic and innovative training institution dedicated to empowering individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) within the food, beverage, hospitality, wholesale and retail sectors. Founded with a mission to nurture talent, foster and support entrepreneurship, and drive economic growth.
SMMEs hold the key to economic growth within their own communities. We are committed to supporting these businesses, equipping them with the tools, insights, and the networks necessary to succeed in an ever competitive and changing market.
The initial pilot intake of 50x SMMEs was successful in that there have been measurable differences and key learnings for those who have participated.
Intake 2 and 3 are currently in progress and comprises of:
- Intake 2: 50x SMMEs and individuals
- Intake 3: 100x SMMEs
The below are some quotes from the first intake of 50 SMMEs who completed an anonymous survey for feedback of their experience:
What our SMMEs have to say:
“My business benefited a lot from the modules that we did on the class because now I know to make profit, how to count my stock, how things should be done on the business all in all.”
“An awakening that we have grossly under-costed ourselves as a business. We have developed a spreadsheet to help us implement the costing formulas. This has been the most important module for us. Areas of improvement: Development of a costing method for recipes that can easily be implemented in new recipes.”
“We operate from a home kitchen and food is served in a separate location with an industrial kitchen (club/restaurant). This program has assisted us with ensuring we teach our staff cleaning procedures, which we previously struggled with. The quality of the food served has increased as a result. We also learnt about proper storage which has significantly reduced wastage. Area of improvement: Developing SOPs so we can implement HACCP principles. We would like to educate our staff about them.”
“When it comes to making profits because I was losing lot of money. Costing modules was very useful.”
“It made us aware of potential risks in the kitchen that we had previously taken for granted.”
The Great Oven South Africa is a transformative social impact initiative introduced by Massive Management in partnership with The Great Oven, a grassroots organisation originally founded in the Middle East. This project harnesses the power of cooking, art, and music to create sustainable food relief and foster community cohesion.
The Great Oven South Africa made its debut at the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival, offering a unique blend of social impact and entertainment. At its heart, the initiative installs beautifully crafted community ovens that serve as both functional food relief infrastructure and cultural hubs. Each oven is built and painted collaboratively with local youth, creating shared spaces for creativity and resilience.
A Legacy of Impact
- Community Empowerment: The Great Oven works with Township Community Leaders to develop inclusive strategies that address food insecurity while promoting long-term development.
- Creative Collaboration: Partnering with South Africa’s renowned Nirox Foundation, artists such as Mary Sibande and Lawrence Lemaoana, alongside their mentorship collective ‘Occupy the Gallery,’ have contributed to the design and live painting of these ovens.
- Cultural Exchange: During the festival, The Great Oven hosted the Bedouin Tent, an immersive space for performance art, live music, and interactive experiences, showcasing the fusion of food, art, and community.
Sustainability and Growth
The Great Oven’s mission is simple yet profound: Build an oven, teach communities how to use it, supply the food, and enable self-sufficiency. This approach transforms short-term relief into sustainable, community-driven solutions.
Massive Management is committed to expanding The Great Oven’s footprint across South Africa, creating lasting change and fostering unity through this innovative and impactful initiative.
